BIGGEST PROBLEM IN NAILS SALONS IS CROSS-CONTAMINATION: cANADIAN PODIATRIST

Within 24 hours of having a pedicure at a west-end Toronto salon, Kristine Galka had trouble standing on her left foot. Within 36 hours, the foot was swollen — and she wound up in an emergency room. Galka's experience is a reminder of the potential health hazards of nail salons — a big business in Toronto, with more than 1,280 establishments offering nail services across the city. Fungus, dirt, and other contaminants can all lurk beneath a spa's relaxing veneer, even under the watchful eye of Toronto Public Health inspectors.

Fungus is probably the most difficult thing to kill, says Toronto-based podiatrist Robert Chelin. "Fungus, when it goes airborne, lives through the heat, it lives through the cold," he says. And it also thrives in the water of foot baths. "Bacteria and fungus and warts — all those things we hear about — need water to grow, they need water to live." Since the jets can be particularly difficult to clean, Chelin suggests opting for foot baths with no jets, a separate easy-to-clean tub, or ones with disposable plastic liners. More generally speaking, the "biggest problem" at nail salons is cross-contamination, he adds. It's important to ask questions at a salon, including how the instruments and footbaths are cleaned and sterilized.

MAXIMALIST RUNNING SHOES ARE IN, MINIMALIST RUNNING SHOES ARE OUTMAXIMALIST RUNNING SHOES ARE IN, MINIMALIST RUNNING SHOES ARE OUT

Over the last five years, there was a rise in interest in barefoot and "minimalist" running, along with an increase in runners getting injured by trying to transition into barefoot and/or minimalist shoe running. Two years ago a new shoe called, the Hoka One One, was thought to represent a new design breakthrough and a new shoe category, the "maximalist shoe". Hoka One One running shoes have much thicker and more cushioned midsoles and have become increasingly popular, especially in the ultra-marathon and trail running community. Recently, other running shoe manufacturers have taken notice of the popularity and success of the Hoka shoe and are now jumping on the "maximalist shoe bandwagon" with their own form of thick-soled, highly cushioned midsole running shoes. Most notable in this category is the newly released Brooks Transcend shoe, which has a much thicker, cushioned midsole, like the Hoka. At the same time, minimalist shoes, such as the Vibram Five Finger shoe, are on closeout specials throughout the country as runners are increasingly voting with their feet and wallets to move away from the much-hyped, questionable benefits of barefoot and minimalist shoe running. My suggestion for all thos who do treat runners to go to their local specialty running shoe stores and inspect and test-wear both the Hoka and Brooks Transcend running shoes that will likely represent the latest trend in running shoe design: the maximalist running shoe.
